It should come as no surprise when we tell you that sleep and exercise are linked. We have often heard that an active life can ensure a better night's sleep. Fortunately, you don't have to be a professional athlete to reap the benefits of exercise and feel the positive effect on your sleep. In fact, you don't even need to have done an intense workout to sleep better at night. But what does it take to get you to sleep more deeply?
According to Brandeis University research published in Sleep Health, the journal of the National Sleep Foundation, even a low-impact workout like simply walking can help you sleep better at night. During the study, 59 participants were observed for four weeks as they were instructed to take more steps than usual each day. The researchers monitored the number of steps the participants took using a health tracker that the participants wore and assessed sleep based on the participants' own experiences. This observational study showed that taking more steps in a day than they were used to on average improved the quality of sleep for the participants, although the participants did not sleep longer than usual.
Now you probably think that you have to take a lot of steps in a day to sleep more deeply at night. Fortunately that is not the case either! The study participants took an average of 7,000 steps per day per person during the study, which is still well below the recommended number of 10,000 steps per day. Quite feasible, right? Tie on that health tracker and go for a walk!
