The most consumed oil in the world. Manufacturers love it because, to use their jargon, it is long-lasting, texturizing and chemically stable. In short:without it, after a few weeks, the spread would taste rancid and a layer of oil would form on top.
Because it is rich in saturated fatty acids (almost like butter) which, when consumed in excess, raise cholesterol levels and increase cardiovascular risks. And because, to grow more and more oil palms, farmers are destroying forests.
Better not to abuse it. So, we limit our consumption of industrial products, preferring, for example, good bread from the baker to sandwich bread. Otherwise, we zap products mentioning oil or vegetable fats without further details, and we favor brands (Casino, Jacquet, La Boulangère, Findus, etc.) that have removed it from some of their references. Finally, be careful, buying an organic product does not guarantee the absence of palm oil!
