There is a real cycling culture in the Netherlands. Through wind and weather our steel steed takes us everywhere. We do know that cycling is healthy, but it has now been investigated how healthy exactly.
Cycling makes us live longer
Cyclists would on average live six months longer than non-cyclists.
Cycling for an hour =living an hour longer
To work, to the supermarket dropping off and collecting the children… An average Dutch person cycles about 75 minutes a week. The researchers calculated that people live an hour longer on average for every hour cycled, which means that you live about half a year longer.
The numbers
The researchers base themselves on figures from the World Health Organization, bicycle statistics from CBS and surveys conducted among approximately 50,000 Dutch people.
