Everything you need to know about blood donation

Who is it for?

One blood donation can treat three different patients! The collected blood is divided into red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Red blood cells are used to treat blood diseases, plasma, for burn victims, hemophiliacs and patients with severe immune disorders. Platelets are used for patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Blood.

It can be donated at the hospital or at blood drives. We answer a questionnaire and we get stung. It lasts 10 min and we take about ½ liter (out of the 5 that circulate in our body). We end up with a snack to perk up.

Plasma or platelets.

The donation is made at the hospital, by appointment. We have an interview with a doctor. We are pampered and fed at will (coffee, tea, croissant, biscuits, sandwich) before and after the donation. The collection lasts 1 hour for plasma and 1.5 hours for platelets.

Bone marrow.

We register on the donor file and we only have a sample taken on the day when a person with whom we are compatible needs it (1 "chance" in 1 million). It's a long-term commitment:we can call on you in 1 month, 10 years... Or never.

Oocytes.

We donate our oocytes if we have already had a child and are under 37 years old. We go through an approved center. If it's OK, we must first get injections to stimulate the ovaries. Then we are hospitalized for a day for the vaginal retrieval of oocytes. Agathe mayeret
