Unlike the majority of products on supermarket shelves, the packaging of Tampax tampons (and not only these…) do not display any details on their composition. But what are they made of? This question, Mélanie, a 19-year-old student, asked herself. Eager to learn more about the composition of these intimate hygiene products and to attract the attention of the firm, the young girl launched an online petition in July on the Change.org site.
On the petition page, Mélanie explains:“No matter how much I looked on the packaging of the Tampax brand products that I have at home and those sold at the supermarket, I could not find any information concerning the composition of the products. This sudden realization came to him after the media coverage of the misfortunes of a young American who had to undergo an amputation of her right leg. The American had contracted toxic shock syndrome (TSS) after wearing a Kotex brand tampon. According to Metronews, its composition could promote the development of staphylococcus aureus in the vagina which seeps into the blood and causes a kind of sepsis. Between the news item and the warnings from each other, it is difficult to be reassured.
According to the young girl, companies persist in maintaining vagueness around the compositions of their products. Everything is done to keep users in the dark. Most mind-boggling insofar as it seriously affects their health. Determined, Mélanie obtained a return from the communication managers of the Tampax company. Results ? No answer worthy of the name except a damning excuse of bad faith:not enough space on the packets to display the composition. Enough to fuel the determination of the young girl who intends to continue the fight. She says:“next step:the Ministry of Health! .
To date, the petition already has more than 39,700 signatures, the goal being to reach 50,000. The page has also been supported by the magazine "60 million consumers". To be continued…
