Finally an explanation! We have all experienced at least once this redness on the face or in the neck after a weekend too watered. South Korean researchers have finally answered the question we were asking ourselves:what causes redness from alcohol?
Scientists from Chungnam National University (located in Daejeon, South Korea) claim that when alcohol metabolites, synthesized chemical compounds, accumulate too much in our body, the blood vessels constrict which leads to an adverse effect on the blood circulation and causes redness. But… because there is a but, our body is supposed to naturally break down these metabolites. And this is where things get complicated! According to Dr. Jong-Sung Kim, it is difficult to differentiate an allergy to alcohol from an inability to break down metabolites in our body. Unfortunately for us, both can make us look like an oxheart tomato!
In any case, whether our body is allergic to alcohol or simply has trouble breaking down metabolites, it's not a very good sign! According to the researchers' conclusions, having a red face after drinking alcohol could be a warning of impending heart problems. In addition, people whose face turns red when they drink alcohol are more likely to develop heart disease, suffer a stroke or even suffer from high blood pressure problems.
Do not panic ! We are not yet at the stage of blushing every week (at least we hope so). And even if we know full well how hard it is to do without your Friday night mojito, as long as we stay reasonable (no more than 2 drinks a day and not every day), it's fine!
