Plant-based drinks are on the rise at the moment, and it shows on supermarket shelves. In recent years, we have seen a multitude of variants appear:almond, hazelnut, coconut, rice, oat, spelled or even soy drink. And it is precisely soy that is the most famous alternative to cow's milk of all, and it is for the best, since it would be the most nutritious of all! According to a test carried out by the University of Montreal in Canada, soy is the most balanced, all categories of vegetable drinks combined.
But what exactly does “balanced” mean? Already the soy drink is less caloric than its competitors, and only provides 95 calories for a glass (240 ml) against 130 calories for rice milk. In the same way, it is one of the lowest fat vegetable drinks on the market, tied with the coconut drink, since they both provide 4.5 g of lipids for a drink. But what surprised us the most is that in terms of protein and calcium, soy does almost better than… cow’s milk itself! Indeed, it provides 330 mg of calcium and 8 g of protein, when cow's milk contains 294.2 mg and 8.11 g respectively... Of course, we must not forget that soy remains controversial:it is in particular accused of having a negative impact on the planet and of mimicking the effect of estrogens (female hormones) in the body, which can cause possible hormonal disorders (in women as in men). However, according to other studies, it would have a preventive effect against certain cancers. One thing is certain:on the nutritional level alone, the soy drink is all good!
