At a time when tampons and sanitary napkins are increasingly decried, a new product is making its way onto the market:menstrual panties. Resembling “classic” panties, it is worn during menstruation instead of (or in addition to) protection. Faced with this phenomenon that intrigues us, we asked a few questions to Marion G., founder of Elia, a 100% French menstrual lingerie brand, made from organic plant fibers (Oeko-Tex® label) and committed against endometriosis (every purchase results in a donation to fight against the disease).
It is an undergarment (we say panties, but it can be a shorty, a tanga, a boxer…) equipped with an absorbent zone made up of several layers of fabric ensuring the absorption of flow and odors but also impermeability, which replaces hygienic protection during menstruation and/or if you have heavy discharge. In theory, there is therefore no need to add protection such as a tampon, towel or cup, but you can do so if you want to be reassured (or if you have chosen a level of protection that is too low). As the absorbent part is ultra-thin (often around 3 millimeters thick), it looks like a classic panty (there are even sensual models!). Nothing to do with a diaper...
The brands offer different levels of protection corresponding to more or less significant flows and/or times during the period (light for the start, very heavy at night, heavy during the day, etc.). As it is specific to each brand and each model, you have to look at the description on the brand's website before ordering (it is often indicated in "stamp equivalent"). The best thing is to test the menstrual underwear at home, on a day when you don't go out (that way, no stress about a possible leak!).
If you estimate the level of protection you need, you can wear the panties all day (or all night). The Elia brand thus provides up to 12 hours of protection (it is not recommended to keep it longer, for hygienic reasons). However, it's really a matter of feeling:if you don't feel clean after several hours, then it's better to change your underwear even if it's not "full". If you no longer wish to use only menstrual underwear, you must plan your stock according to your needs.
Wearing the same panties all day while you have your period can be scary, but don't panic:the fabrics used to absorb the flow are ventilated, which allows them to dry quickly and prevents the development of bacteria and antimicrobials. It is therefore even more hygienic than with a towel or tampon that we would have kept too long. And above all, there is no smell!
It is recommended to rinse the briefs in cold water immediately after use, until the water runs clear, then put them in the washing machine (preferably in a net) or wash them by hand in water at a maximum of 30°C (more eco-friendly, but above all more respectful of the panties), without using fabric softener (it can damage the fibers of the fabric) or putting it in the dryer. The lifespan of a menstrual panty is between 5 and 7 years, a bit like a classic panty. Easy!
In summary, menstrual panties are the alternative to sanitary protection that provides comfort and protection while being greener and more economical (in the long term). We tested, we are convinced!
