With these 5 tips you can run mindfully

Do you like to run, but find yourself still too much in your head while running? Running should mainly help you to relax and that is why we are happy to explain how you can run mindfully with these 5 tips:in the moment, by feeling and with pleasure!

1. Connect with your breath

Bring your attention back to your breath and the sensation of breathing. By guiding yourself through the inhale and exhale, you become aware of the present. The more often you practice this, the more natural it will come to you. Practice this not only with your running shoes on, but also at other times, such as when you are standing in line somewhere. Don't immediately reach for your phone, but take a few deep breaths in and out to stay in the moment. By becoming a mindful person, you can also run mindful.

2. Run on your senses

When you focus on your senses while running, you also stay more in the moment. Therefore, the next time you go for a run, try to experience certain physical sensations well; notice your posture and shoulders, your arms moving back and forth, your hips turning, your knees and the impact of each footstep on the floor. The more you do these kinds of exercises, the more efficiently you can run in your body.

3. Don't use tech

As an avid runner, you probably want to record everything:speed, distance, heart rate, you name it. But that can also take over the experience of running. Therefore, go for a run without a watch at least once a week, so that you focus on the feeling instead of the data. Start and end your walk with focus on your breathing, even before you start moving. Close your eyes and feel your body from your feet to your head. Run the first kilometer with a feeling of gratitude, instead of focusing on speed.

4. Visualize your run

Using visuals to prepare your brain for an experience is a powerful tool. By visualizing your mindful run, you can enjoy it even more than usual when the moment actually comes.

5. Try the STOP method

Are you running and do you need a moment of rest? Then try the STOP method:
1. Quit
2. Take a deep breath
3. Observe your mind and body
4. Continue with an empty head

You can use this method at a traffic light or during a water stop to be more aware of your body and mind. This way you will not only enjoy your runs more, but there is also a good chance that you will improve your performance.
