Antibacterial gels have been in fashion for years now. It has almost become a reflex to have one in your handbag, which you pull out in the metro, in the street... Except that, supposed to protect us from the bacteria that they eliminate "99%", they would rather poison if they are used too regularly! In any case, this is revealed by a new American study published in the very serious medical journal Plos One .
The reason ? Researchers at the University of Missouri (United States) discovered that their plastic packaging contained Bisphenol A – an endocrine disruptor banned in food containers in France since January 2015 -, and that the antibacterial gel facilitated its absorption by the skin. .
Bisphenol A is found in a large number of everyday objects (CDs, glasses, certain plastic bottles, dishes, etc.). But it is food that contributes to more than 80% of the exposure of the population, explains the Ministry of Health. In animals, this substance has effects in particular on reproduction, on the mammary gland, on the metabolism, the brain and behavior. In humans, it is linked to a deterioration in the quality and quantity of sperm, is the cause of miscarriages, and an increased risk of obesity and certain cancers.

In 2013, the association of doctors Santé Environnement France had already warned of their possible dangerousness, but for other reasons. According to her, toxic substances contained in the gels, such as triclosan and glycol ethers, hormonal disruptors, increase the risk of sterility. And remember that not all bacteria are so bad for your health. No need, therefore, to try to eliminate them every hour of the holy day:wash your hands with soap and water before eating, after going to the toilet, taking public transport, or on returning home. self…enough! Gels are used exceptionally, when there is no water point.
