We obviously know that alcohol and driving do not go well together:not only do you endanger your own life, but also that of others. But if there is an equally dangerous factor that we are less wary of, if at all, before hitting the road, it is the lack of sleep. Scientists estimate that 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep are needed each night, and they point out that women need more sleep than men. This quota is of course only very rarely respected (night owls who start their working day early know what we are talking about) and this can be dangerous. Indeed, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), sleeping 1 to 2 hours less than the recommended minimum of 7 hours would double the risk of having an accident! And that's not all:research also shows if we miss 2 hours of sleep compared to this same minimum, our capacities are comparable to those of a drunk driver. It's cold in the back...
AAA CEO Dr. David Yang confirms to Newsroom:“You can't be sleep deprived and expect to drive safely […] Our new study shows that a driver who has slept less than 5 hours is at risk of a traffic accident similar to that of a drunk driver. His scientific colleague, Jake Nelson, explains in turn:"Balancing work and personal life can be difficult, and all too often, the consequence is that we sacrifice sleep ". And the figures are worrying:35% of American drivers sleep less than 7 hours a night, and one in three drivers admitted to having recently taken the road when they had difficulty staying awake. It's scary!
In order to have a good, complete night's sleep, we apply a few tips:we avoid caffeine after 4 p.m., we set a time to go to bed and we stick to it, we banish electronic devices from the bedroom and we maintain the room temperature between 15 and 18 degrees. Of course, we remain particularly careful during this holiday season... Sleep is sacred!
