Are you one of those who desperately want to know the sex of your baby as soon as possible? If so, this news should interest you:scientists claim that it is possible to know if you are expecting a girl or a boy just by looking at the blood pressure of the mother. Specifically, low pressure would indicate the baby is a girl, while high pressure would be a sign of a boy.
To reach these conclusions, the scientists (whose study was published in the American Journal of Hypertension) studied a group of Chinese women who were trying to get pregnant. Their blood pressure, as well as their age, whether they smoke or not, their weight and their cholesterol levels were tested before and after conception. In total, of the 1,411 women in the study, 739 gave birth to boys and 672 to girls. Among moms of girls, systolic blood pressure (measured when the heart contracts) averaged 103.3 mm Hg, compared to 106 for moms of boys. A slight difference therefore, but which would have a major impact. The study does not specify whether women can decide the sex of their future baby by voluntarily playing on their blood pressure.
Of course, the results of the study are to be confirmed and even if it is an interesting advance, we hope that it will not be used to carry out a pre-birth selection...
