Dangerous or harmless? About the electronic cigarette, we hear everything and its opposite! A new study from the University of Salford, in the United Kingdom, contributes its two cents to this debate. Published in the journal Scientific Progress , she maintains that certain flavors of e-liquid would be dangerous.
To come to this conclusion, researchers studied 20 e-liquid refills, in nine different flavors, namely Cherry, Strawberry, Ice Mint, Menthol, Tobacco, Blueberry, Vanilla, Bubblegum, and Caramel. All had been purchased in stores or on the internet. After laboratory tests, all of these flavors were found to be toxic to varying degrees, with the least dangerous being the fruity flavors and the most harmful being the menthol, chewing gum, caramel and tobacco flavors. "We have shown that cells can recover after 48 hours, but not once they have been exposed for 72 hours or more, which has serious consequences for regular smokers," said Dr. Patricia Ragazzon, in charge of of the study.
Scientists have also found that these scents are toxic to embryonic cells. “The composition of the refills is very irregular – some flavors are natural, others are simple compounds, and still others are synthetic – there are so many varieties on the market that it is difficult to measure their harmfulness”, added Dr. Patricia Ragazzon. We can never repeat it enough:the best way to protect yourself against the harmful effects of tobacco is still to quit smoking...
