Stress, lifestyle, lack of sleep, genetics... Many factors can cause frequent migraine episodes and that may not be all. In a study published in the renowned journal Neurology , researchers have shown that extremes on the scale are linked to the risk of migraine. To establish this unprecedented scientific relationship, the authors conducted 12 studies, involving nearly 300,000 people. The analysis thus reveals that people suffering from obesity (with a BMI greater than 30) are 27% more prone to migraines than healthy people. As for those who are underweight (with a BMI of less than 18.5), the risk would increase by 13%. It should be noted that women and young people would be all the more affected by the link between weight and migraine.
The reasons for this link between weight and headaches have not yet been elucidated. Nevertheless, it seems that adipose tissue is at the origin of these disorders. Indeed, the fatty mass containing proteins and hormones could cause, more or less, migraines. Additional work will be carried out soon in order to answer the question that we all ask ourselves:would losing weight (for overweight people) or gaining weight (for those who are thin) reduce the risk of migraines?
