Memory threatened by sugary drinks

With the arrival of summer, our consumption of sodas, fruit juices or iced tea may increase without our realizing it. A small drink on the terrace to cool off, another to sip by the sea or the one at the end of the day to enjoy the sunset. We are quickly consuming three or four sugary drinks during the day and according to the study conducted by the University of Medicine of Boston, regularly drinking sugary drinks would damage the memory, because they contain added sugars. This survey required the participation of 4000 people who for several weeks underwent cognitive tests (related to memory) and MRIs. At the end of this experiment, the researchers discovered that people who drank at least 2 glasses of a sugary drink (fruit juice, iced tea, soda, lemonade, etc.) per day had a less efficient memory as well as a hippocampus ( area of the brain related to learning) smaller. People who consume a glass of sugary drink a day also have memory problems. Enough to encourage us to moderate our consumption!

How to fight?

The government is proposing measures to fight against products that damage our health. Since 2012 the soda tax has been adopted. The bill aims to increase the price of drinks containing added sugars to dissuade the population from consuming too much of these products. In addition, a tax to fight against obesity is being assessed, products would be taxed according to their calories. You can also replace these sweet drinks with lemonade or homemade fruit juice, flavored waters (ginger, cucumber…), fresh milk or even water!
