There are many of us in this case, so it concerns us all a little.
If you sit at a desk all day to work, and you are asked to list all the inconveniences associated with this daily routine, you will not get over it. To begin with, you can say that it is very uncomfortable.
Many causes for this discomfort will then come to justify your statements. Sometimes the chair doesn't roll well all the way to the back of your desk, pushing you away from it. Other times, the seat is either too high or too low, and its pedal is stuck, so it cannot be adjusted to the desired height. Yes, there are indeed a host of small problems like that which, in the end, can cause big problems like back pain, among others.
Surprise! You'll be able to keep complaining about your discomfort, because a University of California study found that sitting for very long periods of time can damage your memory.
The research was carried out on 35 people between the ages of 45 and 65. All participants had a brain scan that specifically looked at the area of the brain called the temporal lobe. This part is absolutely crucial for forming memories.
After brain scans, each participant was assessed on how much time they spent in a chair during the day, and results showed that those who sat longer had finer brain structures than those who didn't.
The researchers concluded that sedentary behavior (movements while sitting or lying down) can have an effect on cognitive memory. However, these are still only hypotheses that will need to be confirmed by further research.
But just in case, remember to stretch your legs from time to time…
