The Christmas tree is the essential decoration during the holidays. Without it, where would we put the presents? However, it is not welcome for everyone. Indeed, some scientists highlight the allergies that these trees can cause, otherwise known as “Christmas tree syndrome”. And if the name is almost nice, this problem is actually a real ordeal for those affected. So why can the tree quickly become our worst enemy?
According to a poll reported by The Independent , “more than a third of Britons suffer from an increase in hay fever-like symptoms at this time of year”. How do we recognize the syndrome? The first symptoms come rather quickly, starting with itching in the nose and eyes (which can also cry), then the cough appears, as well as possible pain in the stomach, accompanied by a feeling of heat in the area of the head. Doctors also warn asthmatics, who, if they bring a tree into their living room, must watch out for the mold that develops naturally on the tree... Good to know:ambient heat accelerates their proliferation.
Clearly, if you are allergic, it is better to invest in a fake Christmas tree... it's (almost) as nice, and much less risky!
