Baby can't stand milk:what does that mean?
Milk allergy is the first allergy that can appear in children. A baby who cannot stand milk is an abnormal reaction of the immune system. This means that her body does not recognize the proteins in cow's milk and/or other infant formulas. The newborn's immune system considers milk proteins as external attacks. However, a distinction must be made between milk allergy and lactose intolerance. In fact, intolerance is not a reaction of the immune system, but rather an inability to properly digest lactose. The problem is therefore digestive. Fortunately, milk allergy, like lactose intolerance, is very rare and disappears around the age of 3.
The 5 signs that the baby does not support milk
Here are the signs that show that the baby cannot stand milk and that you have to take him to see a pediatrician quickly.
- Inconsolable crying after meals:If the baby cries systematically after each bottle, or even during feeding, start by replacing the bottle or the pacifier. If you are sure it is not a problem with the nipple, position or other discomfort, there is a problem with the milk.
- Too much spitting up:Babies spit up, and this reaction is completely normal. But when the regurgitation is excessively abundant and the baby does not gain weight, it may be due to the milk that he cannot stand .
- Vomiting and diarrhoea:it is easy to tell the difference between vomiting and regurgitation in babies. If your child vomits in a jet after each bottle, or several times in a row, you must quickly take him to the doctor who will prescribe him a more suitable milk. The same is true for stools that are too frequent, very liquid and smelly.
- Swollen face or rashes:When patches of pimples appear on baby's body and/or face, and these pimples itch, it may be due to cow's milk. The abnormally swollen face is also a sign of allergy.
- A lot of gas:if the baby's flatulence is odorous and very frequent, if he suffers from bloating and becomes irritable, it is likely that the baby cannot stand his milk .
