If the pepper does not always do good at the time of tasting, it would seem that in the long term, its effects are more than positive. Researchers at the University of Vermont have in fact found that regular consumption of Mexican red chili peppers was associated with greater longevity.
To reach these conclusions, a large-scale study was conducted. For about 18 years, the eating habits of 16,179 Americans were scrutinized. Result:the condiment would reduce mortality from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 13%. The other factors (diet and lifestyle) only have a moderate impact on this figure. The link between longevity and chili consumption is still a little unclear, but researchers lean towards the main component of chili, capsaicin. The latter binds to a receptor located on the surface of blood vessels, which has the effect of activating several cellular and molecular mechanisms. These mechanisms are able to modulate the blood flow in the coronaries or to prevent obesity, two factors that can lead to a reduced risk of heart disease or stroke.
Until we know more, nothing prevents us from spicing up our dishes a little! Except maybe the feeling of having your mouth on fire...
