Slime:a game not without dangers

Do you know what slime is? Sticky, elastic, colorful, slime, which means "drool" in French, is a paste that is kneaded for fun and floods social networks. We have seen it in films like Ghostbusters or Flubber. The big problem? Its chemical composition could cause burns and disorders of all kinds. And the tutorials for making it at home increase the risks because the apprentice chemist who wants to can't improvise. The catastrophe happened quickly… Explanations.

Boric acid in question

More commonly known as borax, boric acid can be used as an antiseptic, insecticide or deodorant (by the way, very effective for smelly feet!). To make homemade slime, you need white glue, water… and the famous borax, which gives this viscous effect. The mixture is a toxic chemical cocktail that can cause burns, blisters, nosebleeds and other allergies. Two cases particularly shocked Internet users:a young Englishwoman found herself with blistered hands and a little girl even suffered third-degree burns (for your information, there are four degrees of burn, the fourth being charring… )

Fortunately, new compositions are appearing with cornstarch, more familiarly known as cornstarch. But in any case, we keep in mind that we should not fiddle with the slime all day, that we wash our hands after each contact, that we leave it in the hands (inhalation, chewing and licking are obviously prohibited) and that it is not kept for more than a few weeks.

Clearly, slime is in moderation...
