Trembling muscles during a workout. How did that happen?

Another five, four, three, two… While you close with a plank after an intensive training, you feel your arm muscles vibrate. The longer you hold on, the more it will vibrate and you will absolutely not be able to stop it. How come and can you prevent it?

You look around and it seems that you are the only one there trying to hold yourself high with trembling arms. You concentrate to control the vibrations, but there is no starting. In fact:you have the feeling that you could collapse in no time!

Twitching muscles

These twitching muscles are also called muscle tremors and arise when you ask too much of your muscles. The load on your muscles is just too great, so that muscle fibers are stretched and contracted uncontrollably. This causes your nerve endings to become irritated and your muscles to vibrate uncontrollably.

Prevent

Because you don't want to suffer from uncontrolled muscle tremors like the others in the gym, there are a number of things you can do to prevent that:

  • Don't take too much on your fork and build up your training sessions slowly. Also take enough rest in between and do a good warm up. If you overload your muscles too often, the risk of injury increases.
  • Make sure your water bottle is well filled, because hydration is super important! Drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout. This way you can absorb the moisture loss from sweating well. If you train for more than half an hour, it is wise to drink a sports drink. It contains potassium and sodium and prevents acidification of your muscles.
  • A fruit drink or a banana also works wonders. The shaking of your muscles can also be caused by a lack of glycogen in the muscles. This is the energy supply that your body gets from carbohydrates. You can restore your glycogen by taking in fast sugars.
  • Another miracle cure is a good stretch before you start your workout. Stretching puts tension on your muscle fibers and prevents them from vibrating uncontrollably.
  • Make sure you've had a good night's sleep. Sleep deprivation can sometimes make you feel sluggish when you start a workout, which can cause tremors. So if you've had a rough night:skip the gym and get up and running early.
