The number of corona infections has been increasing for several weeks now. Experts now want to make face masks mandatory again in the fight against the virus.
According to epidemiologist Frits Rosendaal of the Leiden University Medical Center, there is a lot of evidence that face masks help to prevent the spread of the virus. Mandating the wearing of face masks again is, according to him, a measure that hurts the least and can relieve the pressure on care.
The Red Team agrees. Bert Mulder, medical microbiologist and member of the Red Team, points out that the flu season is approaching. “If you wait until the hospitals are completely full, you will be late again,” he says.
That is also the view of Marino van Zelst, researcher and also a member of the Red Team. ‘You would rather intervene as early as possible with minor interventions, than wait until you have to take more blunt measures again. Nobody wants that.”
