While a survey carried out in 2019 told us that 65% of French people say they cannot sleep without a blanket even in the event of high heat (a question of comfort and/or fear of monsters it seems), here is some information related to temperature and sleep which should interest more than one:sleeping in a room that is too hot increases considerably the risk of a nightmare.
Dr. Neil Stanley, former president of the British Sleep Society (the British Sleep Association in VF), indeed told the Daily Mail too high a temperature leads to sleep disturbances, including bad dreams. If you remember zombies and other monsters waking up, it's normal, it's because of the heat!
According to this sleep expert, the ideal bedroom temperature is between 16 and 18°C (an unattainable goal in hot weather, we agree), in order to allow the body to lower its internal temperature by about 1°C. The risk if not? As we sleep less well, the brain is more active (the REM sleep phase is longer), which leads to more "vivid" and remembered dreams, including nightmares. Not cool!
Dr. Stanley therefore recommends sleeping in a cool room, and putting the odds on our side by avoiding eating too late (digestion increases body temperature) and favoring breathable materials such as linen or cotton for the sheets and bedding. On good terms…
