Nervous pregnancy consists of feeling the main symptoms of pregnancy even though you are not pregnant:absence of periods, weight gain, feeling of heavy and painful breasts, pain in the lower abdomen, nausea... Sometimes even, women who suffer from it may experience contractions! They are certain that they are expecting a baby when in reality they are not pregnant at all. Only the pregnancy test, possibly supplemented by an ultrasound, can see more clearly.
Nervous pregnancy is above all a psychic disorder:some women want to be pregnant so much or, on the contrary, are so afraid of being pregnant, that the mind "gets ahead" by making them experience all the symptoms. of pregnancy, while the body is not at all on the same wavelength. It is generally a way for the woman to evacuate a very present stress:the desire or the anxiety to get pregnant is so strong that it acts directly on the hormones. This phenomenon particularly affects young girls or older women. In other women, other causes for nervous pregnancy can be found:loss of a baby, general stress, conflict in the family...
There is no actual treatment for nervous pregnancy. Realizing that you are not pregnant and talking about it with a doctor is usually enough to put things back in order. Depending on the case, psychological follow-up may however be necessary to live things (possibly a real pregnancy) in a more serene way afterwards.
