There is of course a difference between exercise and training. But what exactly is that? Is one better than the other? Our sports experts Christina and Heidy explain.
Do you drink water from the tap or do you go to the well to draw water? Do you use the washing machine or walk to the river to wash your clothes on stones? Do you often take the car or do you go on foot or on your horse? Do you go to the supermarket for your groceries or do you milk your own cow, grind your own grain and get vegetables from your own vegetable garden?
Chances are you use the modern tools we have today. That's totally okay of course. That is, if you replace all the physical exercise that people used to have with another form of exercise. After all, our bodies are made to move. “Okay, I see,” you may be thinking. But WHAT should I do then?

We already know that exercise is important. It is good for your body, it reduces stress and contributes to a healthy mind, especially if you also do this outside. Walking, cycling, taking the stairs… All good ways to move.
Does this replace lifting a heavy bucket of water from the well home? Do you have to pull the tubers out of the ground a lot to have food on your plate in the evening? Or grinding grain? With all these activities you work on your muscle strength. Do you often have a hard time and do you cross a border? Not when walking or cycling.
And that's where you come to the difference between exercise and training. Moving is nice and easy. Your heart rate hardly goes up and your muscles are not loaded so much that muscle growth takes place. Let the latter now be extremely important. Also for women. Why?
Real TRAINING is therefore crucial for good health for every woman.
This of course depends on the goal you have. Do you want to be nice and fit, have strong muscles to function optimally in daily life and feel better in your bathing suit or bikini? Then the following training method is recommended:
This is a workout where you work in high-intensity intervals, alternating with a low-intensity interval. This could be HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). However, if you include interval sessions when running, so for example sprinting for 20 seconds followed by a few minutes of running at a normal pace and sprinting again, we also talk about interval training.
With a cardio training where your heart rate always remains at the same level (such as, for example, 45 minutes at one pace on the cross trainer), you do not create a training stimulus. In addition, you burn muscle mass during long cardio workouts and you do NOT want that. With a good interval training, 30 minutes is enough. Short, intensive and effective. Interval training is good if you want to lose weight as well as increase your endurance.
Strength training/muscle training is extremely important. Perhaps, like many women, you are afraid that you will look like a bodybuilder. You don't have to be afraid of that. We women have far too little testosterone to start looking like this. Strength training ensures a beautifully shaped body and it also has all kinds of health benefits. But also:the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. You can increase your muscle mass quite easily by training your large muscle groups; legs, back and chest. This can also be done with your own body weight.
Strength training is good for losing weight, increasing your muscle mass, but also for feeling mentally stronger. It can even help fight depression. So make sure you integrate TRAINING into your life, preferably 3 times a week. In addition, it is important to exercise every day.
